Another Cheer for the Scribes!

The Writer's Guild of America just recently voted to determine the 100 Best Screenplays of All-Time. It's interesting that whenver the AFI does one of its lists naming the best 100 movies in a certain category it gets to be on TV but when the 100 best screenplays are named its relegated to a dot of an article in a newspaper. But this blog has long been a supporter of screenwriters everywhere and we will not hesitate to place the Writer's Guild Top 10 front and center to give them the love they deserve. The 10 greatest screenplays...................

1. Casablanca
2. The Godfather
3. Chinatown
4. Citizen Kane
5. All About Eve
6. Annie Hall
7. Sunset Boulevard
8. Network
9. Some Like It Hot
10. The Godfather Part II

Of those 10 there are only 2 I have not seen - "All About Eve" and "Sunset Boulevard". And while personally I would, of course, move "Chinatown" into the top slot it's pretty much impossible to argue with these choices.

Sunset Blvd was okay. I'm not sure what makes it a top ten contender, I'd have to see the reasoning. Call me sceptical. Not one from the 1980 or onward? And half the top five from the 70s? That seems suspiciously skewed.
