A Whole New Mann-Land

Wait, wait, wait. Why didn't anyone TELL me Michael Mann's daughter was directing movies?! Seriously! You don't think that's information I'd like to know?!

Make sure to check back on January 31 (or thereabouts, upon its arrival from my Netflix queue) for my review of Ami Canaan Mann's "Texas Killing Fields."

Do not get your hopes up too much. She definitely has talent as a director, but the script needed one more pass. Morgan and Chastain are fine (especially the former), but Worthington is stiff (as usual) and Moretz exists to be a plot point. The movie maintains a nice atmosphere until the predictable 3rd act, when it busts out the standard cop-thriller cliche ending.

Like I said, she has technical talent, but hasn't yet figured out how to pick scripts.

Also noteworthy: this movie, from David Lynch's daughter. It has a similar plot setup to Texas Killing Fields, and the script shares pretty much the same flaws. But Lynch's atmosphere is done a slight bit better.

Yeah, that's the impression I got from the other couple things I read about it. Impressive atmosphere, lacking elsewhere, which actually sounds a lot like......early Michael Mann.
