5 Most Anticipated Fall/Winter Movies

It's almost here! Fall, glorious fall, segueing into winter, heavenly winter, and this means the best time of year for movies is upon us!

Most lists counting down the most anticipated films for this fall/winter movie season will contain your usual suspects, your "Hobbit", your "Lincoln", your "Skyfall", your "Django Unchained", your "Here Comes The Boom" (adapted from Hemingway novel about the drunken man of biology who turns to fighting for blood to regain his sense of self), but we here at Cinema Romantico want to turn your potential attention to the five upcoming films that most have our mouths watering.

1.) The Other Dream Team. Everyone in America remembers the original basketball Dream Team of the 1992 Olympics. No one in America remembers (if they ever knew at all) the story of the Lithuanian basketball team of the 1992 Olympics. People will tell you the greatest basketball game nobody ever saw was the Monaco Dream Team Practice Game, but it's really the Russia/Lithuania bronze medal game of 1992. (Well, no one in America got to see it. Including me.) A team finally freed from the shackles of Soviet communism and sponsored in part by The Grateful Dead (no, really!), they......well, you should really just see the movie. Trailer.

Malin Akerman stars in "Stolen" with, uh, some other dude.
2.) Stolen. Ex-thief Nicolas Cage's daughter has been, ahem, stolen and locked in the back of a trunk. He must rescue her. So why do I want to see this? Because my official Cinematic Crush Malin Akerman co-stars, of course! I know what you're thinking. You're thinking, Malin Akerman is just going to spend the whole film locked in a trunk. Ah, but Ms. Akerman is NOT the daughter! She is Nic's ex-cohort who must help in the rescue! She's the Sundance to his Butch! The Chris Shiherlis to his Neil McCauley! I CAN'T WAIT! (Fact: I will live to regret this. Fact: I actually want to see "Easy Money", a Swedish crime thriller finally get a stateside release, more than "Stolen" but I can't admit that out loud.) Trailer. Which you shouldn't watch.

3.) Argo. We all have our own opinions about Ben Affleck as an actor but I strongly admire the fact that as a director, thus far, he is really trying to do interesting things. Trailer.

4.) Holy Motors. The Cannes sensation of which my friend Andy became a public champion, which is awesome. It hits the Windy City on November 9th. I'll be there. Oh, will I. And not just because it features Kylie Minogue. Although it does feature Kylie Minogue. Did I mention it features Kylie Minogue? I did? Like, a half a second ago? Well, just to be on the safe side, it does feature Kylie Minogue. Trailer.

5.) Anna Karenina. The big screen? Screw the big screen! I want the BIGGEST screen! I want "Anna Karenina" in IMAX! Please? Pretty please? Trailer.

The Other Dream Team sounds and looks incredible. That's one I hadn't heard about until very recently. Really excited for that one.

I think we're gonna have a hell of a fall.

The Other Dream Team sounds very interesting. Thanks for putting it on my radar.

As you know, HOLY MOTORS is the shit - and thanks for the plug :-)

Argo I am excited for too. Nice selections.

Alex: Doesn't it look incredible? I knew all about that story but didn't even know the documentary existed until a few weeks ago when I caught the trailer. I've got my fingers crossed for fall.

Andy: Man, I've been looking forward to Holy Motors ever since I read your rave of it. I'm inching closer to the day I can finally see it.

I didn't know about The Other Dream Team. Will definitely be tracking that one down.

Have you seen Once Brothers? It's the ESPN 30 for 30 doc about Vlade Divac and Drazen Petrovic, stars of the Yugoslavian Olympic team from that same time period. It's quite good.

Oh hey, this is Eric, by the way. For whatever reason, it wouldn't let me comment via my Wordpress account. Any idea what's up with that?

Hey, Eric! I have seen Once Brothers. I've seen the majority of the 30 for 30 series and that was one I definitely liked. I will even admit that I never cared much for Vlade Divac as a basketball player but that doc totally brought me around.

I'll have to see if I can figure out if there's something wrong with the comments. I know that's been a problem once or twice in the past. Blogger likes to have issues now and again.

Heh, I guess it did show my name. I wasn't sure what my poorly improvised G+ account would display. I tried to post a comment a while back but gave up when I kept getting errors. But at least I can use this for now.

Cool, didn't know you were a big sports fan (though I should have guessed from your Olympics coverage). I'm still working my way through the 30 for 30 box set, but there have definitely been some great ones in there. Got a huge kick out of the Spike Lee vs. Reggie Miller rivalry.

The U & The Pony Express were my favorites - and The Two Escobars - but that's mainly because college football is far and away my favorite sport. I don't really get into pro sports much until their respective playoff times. College football and the Olympics, that's where it's at for me. Which is a weird combo, isn't it?

That's funny -- I'm pretty much the exact opposite. I follow pro sports fairly religiously, but only get into college stuff at the end of the season (namely March Madness).

I'll try to check out The U & The Pony Express next. Heard good things about The U especially.

Mwahahaha… your love for miss Akerman knows no bounds, Nick. Stolen! Now I don't think I've ever seen that in anyone's anticipated list. But hey, I have anticipated equally bad movies from my favorite actor, so yeah!! I'm excited for ARGO too, Ben Affleck is one heck of a director, and he's quite good in front of the camera when he's also behind the camera, go figure!
