I know this wasn't the question but the Closest movie I remember is the character Ash in the movie "Army of Darkness" when he grabs the woman and says "give me some sugar baby" and maybe perhaps a scene in Princess Bride...but both of those are back 25yr+ years...BUT come on! We definitely and are tongue in cheek kind of movies.WE NEED SOME OF THAT UP CLOSE and personal stuff MELODRAMATIC or not...life is drama...But why they don't? probably Directors want to be "original" nowadays when they are anything but sometimes...cheers
It's kind of sad that they don't have this shot any more. I wonder if people today would still have romantic feelings if someone did use this shot today or if they would just consider it "chessy" because it was so overused back in the day.
Phillip: Ha! That shot in "Army of Darkness" did not even occur to me but you're right. Good call.
Lasso: Truth is it probably wouldn't look right today. It's probably too melodramatic (granted, I personally adore melodrama) for most modern tastes.
Vance: Eeeeeeh. I totally didn't think of that but I suppose you could be right. I just always saw it as intense passion but twist it just ONE degree.....
I have no examples but I'm sure it's done in modern cinema, just with less emphasis.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds the constant heavy passion and pointless sex scenes in movies these days to be a problem. I might be guilty of rolling my eyes at classic cinema from time to time but at least they didn't have to put up with Jake Gyllenhaal and Anna Kendrick going at it in End of Watch whilst the director pretended to be a ghost with a handheld Sony.
You're forgetting this one Nick http://marshallmatlock.com/wp-content/gallery/the-mans-man-xxiii-gregory-peck/gregory%20peck%20ingrid%20bergman%20spellbound%202.jpg :)
I think the Hays Code made things sexier as things that are taboo always does! I think 'less is more' is not a bad thing to consider when it comes to sexuality in the movies.
Toby: No worries! There was no ruining of fun! It's ALL fun (well, most of it) at Cinema Romantico!
Ruth: Nice call! That is a good one, too. There are others. The one that actually conjured up this whole post idea was The Greatest Show On Earth (which I couldn't find) which I just watched for the first time on account of my Dad.
My mom was a HUGE Errol Flynn fan. I was basically raised on "Star Wars" and Flynn/de Havilland pictures. And "Captain Blood" & "Adventures of Robin Hood" still are and always will be two of my all-timers. Love those movies dearly.
Maybe it's a bit outdated, because it's glorifying women fawning over their loved ones when perhaps women now don't prefer to romanticize that. I DON'T KNOW MAYBE.
Maybe you're right. De Havilland herself had a few not so nice things to say about those roles opposite Flynn years later and she definitely had a point, although I cannot help but admit I still deeply enjoy them anyway.
My deepest apologies if I offended. I mean no offense. I only asked out of curiosity. Your response is appreciated.

They're allowed to kiss for longer than the Hays code these days?
Far too dry an answer! Sorry.
That actually sounds about right.
Sigh. In some cases The Hays Code unwittingly made things sexier.

My guess is that it can be interpreted as misogynistic in some way? Or at the very least, patriarchal.

I'm sorry for ruining the fun earlier.

I don't know but I love that you have two Flynn/de Havilland pics.
