The Seasonal "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" Friday Afternoon Quote

I don’t consider myself a “Star Trek” fan by any means. Of course, I did always love Bones. What’s not to love? He’s a bitter, cynical, eternally irritated man. I did enjoy a few of the episodes from the earliest incarnation of the TV show, but these were only the campiest of shows – mainly the ones where they went down to some whacked-out planet and Shatner fell in love with an alien. I’ve never much cared for anything else in the "Star Trek" universe. All that said, I have always loved “Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home”. It’s not just good – it’s funny. Really funny. Oh, sure, the jokes are corny - and some of them dated - but that's a significant part of their charm.

For the uninitiated, "Star Trek IV" is the one where the crew of the Enterprise is forced to travel back in time to get some humpback whales in order to save the world. They land in present-day San Francisco and, lo and behold, hi-jinks of the most madcap sort ensue.

So why in the name of DeForest Kelly am I writing about "Star Trek IV"? I'll tell you why, loyal readers. As summer rolls into high gear it is time for Cinema Romantico to begin what we'll call a seasonal traditional. Right here - on this blog and this blog only - every Friday afternoon during this summer in the year of 2006 - you will be able to indulge in a side-splitting quote taken straight from the witty text of "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home". It will allow me to waste time on a Friday afternoon when I should be in a beer garden putting money in a jukebox and it will allow you to waste time on a Friday afternoon when you should be in a beer garden putting money in a jukebox. Everybody wins! Without further adieu, let the festivities commence...........

Kirk: “If we play our cards right maybe we can get her to tell us when those whales are being released.”
Spock: “How will playing cards help?”

It's not his fault. In college, he did a little too much LDS.
