My friend Dave recently noted my lack of new movie reviews on this blog which purports to primarily be in existence to offer, uh, new movie reviews. Well, it's sort of Cinema Romantico's off season seeing as how we're in the midst of the summer movie season and 1.) I don't care for a lot of summer movies and 2.) I made it a personal mantra this year to only see the summer movies I really want to see.
But recent developments in relation to a little spat started by acclaimed filmmaker Spike Lee with comments directed at renowned filmmaker Clint Eastwood (Clint didn't feature any African-Americans in his casts for the recent WWII movies "Flags of Our Fathers" and "Letters From Iwo Jima") has left me feeling a little sad. Why? I like them both and, damn it, I don't want to take sides. Quite frankly, they both have a point in regards to their brew ha-ha and since they both have a point, well, I think their points cancel each other out and so they should just make nice.
That's why I was happy to see Andrew O'Heir's article on salon.com expertly tackle this subject. Everything he says is what I feel. Well, except for when he makes a suggestion about Spike re-making "Million Dollar Baby". I like Spike, I do, but in regards to that....no.
Just no.
