Fall Preview

Oh yes, fall and winter movie season is upon us. And I am - just like Jerry was when the pretend jovial voice he, George and Kramer created for poor Claire's stomach to use as a means of communication returned - "so glad it's back." In flipping through Entertainment Weekly's Fall Movie Preview I found myself stopping on each and every page because there was always at least one movie that caused me to comment, "I need to see that." Whereas when I flip through Entertainment Weekly's Summer Movie Preview it can sometimes take 3,4 pages before I find the need to make that comment.

In any event, these are the 10 films I'm anticipating the most as we begin to leave the dregs of summer behind and press on to the splendors of autumn.

1.) Elizabeth: The Golden Age. Admittedly, I was indifferent to the first Elizabeth film, though Cate Blanchett's performance as the title character was quite riveting. But I just saw a preview for the new one and, man, it looks pretty darn good. Plus, Clive Owen as Sir Walter Raleigh? How can you go wrong?

2.) No Country For Old Men. The Coen Brothers' new film has been garnering some tremendous buzz.

3.) The Brave One. Jodie Foster's back in action. Need I say more?

4.) American Gangster. Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe go head to head. Need I say more?

5.) The Savages. Laura Linney and Phillip Seymour Hoffmann as brother & sister. Need I.....well, you get the point.

6.) Margot at the Wedding. The new film from Noah Baumbach (writer/director of "The Squid and the Whale") stars Nicole Kidman and Jennifer Jason Leigh as bickering sisters. This one's right up my personal alley.

7.) The Darjeeling Limited. I know there were many who didn't like Wes Anderson's last outing, "The Life Aquatic" (which, incidentally, was co-written by the aforementioned Baumbach) but I loved it. In fact, as time passes the more I think it's my favorite Wes Anderson movie. So, yeah, I'll be in line for his new one.

8.) The Golden Compass. There is simply no reason why I should have any interest in seeing a movie about a parallel universe with talking polar bears, and Eva Green flying, and Sam Elliot as a helpful Texan (?) but you know what? I kinda' do.

9.) Fred Claus. Paul Giamatti is Santa Clause and Vince Vaughn plays his brother Fred who moves back home to the North Pole. You know what, just watch this.

10.) There Will Be Blood. This is the new Paul Thomas Anderson movie starring Daniel Day Lewis. I repeat, the new Paul Thomas Anderson movie starring Daniel Day Lewis. Wait, what? You still didn't hear me? My apologies. This is the NEW PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON MOVIE STARRING DANIEL (F---ING) DAY LEWIS.

With regard to "The Brave One" and Jodie Foster. See "Flightplan" with Jodie Foster and you will understand why I'm not excited about another Foster film.
